Canadian tourist arrested after giving Heil Hitler salute in holiday photo outside Reichstag
A Canadian tourist who thought it would be funny to give a Heil Hitler! salute outside the Reichstag has ended up in jail. The 30-year-old man was standing on the steps of the Reichstag with his right arm raised as his girlfriend photographed him in the forbidden pose. Authorities arrived within seconds, handcuffed him and confiscated the memory chip card from her digital camera.

Each year hundreds of tourists make the mistake of thinking that public jokes about Hitler and Nazis are acceptable in Germany. Some years ago a British man at Cologne airport gave Hitler Salute to an aggressive car hire official - and was arrested within 90 seconds.

Hitler Salutes, Nazi Songs and Dreams of a Greater Reich - Ex Neo Nazi speaks up
Uwe Luthardt was a senior member of the right-extremist NPD. But he quit after 3 months. He depicts the NPD as a radical party, bent on restoring the German Reich, where Hitler salutes and financial irregularities are common. (Q) People who leave are threatened? (A) It happens. Otherwise the party would have even fewer members. The mood isn't good at the moment. The party is short of money. (Q) What didn't you like? (A) It wasn't really my world. When you went along to evening meetings, you saw all the shaved heads and a black sun or other Nazi symbols tattooed on arms. They usually just boozed. If there's no opponent around, they just fight among themselves.

Nazi-themed parade: 200 Thai students in red outfits with swastikas
A Thai school has apologized for a celebration that involved a Nazi-themed parade. Photos from the event showed 200 students dressed in red outfits with swastikas on their baseball caps behind a large sign with "NAZI". Some students at the school wore stylized stormtrooper uniforms, carried fake rifles or performed the "sieg heil" salute. Nazi regalia and symbols surface in Thailand and other parts of Asia, often treated as chic design elements for unrelated products. In 1988 a Nazi-themed bar in a Bangkok mall drew protests because of its glamorization of the Third Reich. And Hong Kong and Japan have witnessed a growth in the casual wearing of SS uniforms.

Nazi salute from Adolf Hitler's birthplace: Austrians acquitted
Five Austrians who were photographed performing the Nazi salute at Mauthausen camp are at large despite strict laws banning such acts. The young men were members of the football fan club "Braunauer Bulldogs" in Braunau am Inn, where Adolf Hitler was born. The youngest one, only 15yo, stood in front of one of the Mauthausen prison huts and raised his arm in a Nazi salute. His four friends raised their arms in reply and a photo was taken and posted on the group's site, where it was spotted and the five were charged under the law against National Socialist revivals, which forbids public display of Nazi salutes.

Clarkson's blitzkrieg offends the Germans
Jeremy Clarkson has made his own unforgettable contribution to Anglo-German relations. Discussing BMW's new Mini, he gave the Heil Hitler salute on screen and made mocking references to the Nazis and the Second World War. After hearing that the Mini had been designed with built-in teaspoons and teabags to give it a British touch, he suggested it be recreated as a "quintessentially" German car. Then, mocking the Nazi invasion of Poland in September 1939, he said: "A satellite navigation system that only goes to Poland."
